T. Quaintance Johnson
An artist whose work bridges sculpture, natural history, fine art and craft. His work is deeply informed by the geology, ecology, and cultural heritage of the Red Rocks region, blending art, science, and storytelling into one visual language.
Working professionally since 1982, Tim brings over four decades of creative exploration to his Red Rocks Art Studio, nestled in the foothills of Morrison, Colorado.
A graduate of the University of Colorado Denver, he earned a BFA in Sculpture with distinction. He continued his training in 1984 at the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture, completing a rigorous apprenticeship in modeling and enlarging.
In 1986, he founded Pioneer Arts Studio and Gallery in Morrison, establishing a lifelong commitment to both artistic practice and community engagement.
Mediums & Methods
His work spans a wide range of disciplines, including sculpture, pottery, photography, digital art, blacksmithing, jewelry and AI-assisted art.
His recent explorations in artificial intelligence involve a collaborative process of experimentation, interpretation, and artistic direction. These works extend beyond traditional digital imaging, exploring unexpected forms and possibilities that may ultimately find expression in two or three dimensions.
Artist Statement
Art is not a mold of society… but rather a hammer to break it.
Art is the pursuit of meaningful expression through form, sensation, feeling, and imagination. Even when the means of getting there are unexpected, collaborative, absurd, or not yet invented.
Survival may explain how we came to experience the world. Art explores what makes that experience worth having.
Art is not confined to what we create. It can also exist in how we perceive, arrange, interpret, and experience the world.
A bad example is still an example. But a good mistake might become a masterpiece.
